Hi, babes! Emma here, and let me introduce you to the new skin care trend you might have heard of by now as it's been all over TikTok, skin flooding. Let's dive right in, shall we?
It's that time of year when our parched winter skin needs an extra hydration boost. You probably reach for rich, thick creams and plumping, moisturising serums out of instinct. The good news is that you might have the right things in your hands, but stop and consider whether you're utilising them correctly. Fortunately, a popular skincare practice that hydrates dry skin is on TikTok and provides the answer. Introducing skin flooding.
The term may sound like a passing phase, but the idea is straightforward. To deliver deeper, longer-lasting moisture, skin flooding requires layering moisturising products in a precise order. It consists of four easy steps: a gentle cleanse, a mist application, the use of one or more serums, and finishing off with moisturising.
The main component of this routine, hyaluronic acid, draws and hangs on to water molecules. Niacinamide serum can be added to skin flooding treatments for additional calming and anti-inflammatory effects. Your products will successfully supply hydration if you layer them carefully, starting with thinner, water-based products and moving on to thicker, oilier ones.
While TikTok trends may come and go, the idea of skin flooding remains based on fundamental skincare principles even when the buzzy term is removed.
Although the social media trend is relatively new, the idea of "skin flooding" is well-known in the skincare industry. Layering serums and creams is a typical strategy used to "flood" the skin with hydration, boost product efficacy and absorption, and safeguard the skin barrier.
Start with a gentle face wash that cleanses your skin without removing any of its natural oils if you want to skin flood successfully. By doing this, you can start your skincare routine with skin that is balanced and soft.
Keep your face just a little bit wet rather than entirely drying it. Damp skin is more effective in this stage because moisturisers absorb water more effectively when they have a water supply to draw from. For a relaxing effect, you can also sprinkle a thermal water spray over your skin.
Next, you should dab some hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin. You only need three to four drops of serum to completely cover your face and neck. Gently massage the product into your face and neck using the tips of your fingers. Any product that is left over, I like to use on the back of my hands.
Apply a barrier-protecting face lotion or cream as the final step in your skin-flooding process to seal in all that hydration goodness. In the event that your skin floods in the morning, don't forget to layer sunscreen on top.
Are there any risks to this routine?
Skin flooding is safe for the majority of skin types and is not an inherently irritating skincare practise because it doesn't use active substances. However, if you have sensitive skin, use caution as skin flooding promotes the uptake of skincare products. In addition, since layering many products might cause breakouts, this approach might not be appropriate for people with oily skin or acne-prone skin. Consult a board-certified dermatologist if you have any medical skin concerns to see whether a skin-flooding routine is appropriate for you.
The first thing to know is that hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide, or a long chain of carbohydrates, that is naturally present in our skin. Being a versatile component that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, it is useful for preserving the hydration and flexibility of skin.
Hyaluronic acid works better by attracting and holding moisture to the surface of your skin when it is applied to slightly damp skin as opposed to dry skin.
Niacinamide serum and a thermal spring water mist can both be used as part of your routine to soothe sensitive skin during the winter. The routine's final moisturising phase gives an additional layer of moisture, repairs your skin barrier, and prevents water loss.
Skin flooding enables you to get the most out of your skincare routine because layering products in the right order is crucial for product effectiveness.
Have you tried this new trend? Let me know in the comments what you think!
Bye for now, babes.
Love,
Emma

Awesome article. I have to try a few of these tips because this winter is really destroying the skin.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback! I'm really glad it'll help you. Winter truly is terrible for the skin.
DeleteFantastic read, thank you for sharing this! I have seen this all over skincare TikToks, and now that I understand the trend a bit better, I'll be jumping right on it
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! I appreciate your feedback :D
DeleteOhh, I've been doing this for about a week and it really works. Yeah, remove the buzzworthy name and it's a regular hydrating routine, but it does work well for dry skin. I'm using a cleansing cream currently, and layering hydrating serums for my night routine. I'm also slugging every evening. My skin is glowing!
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic to hear! Thank you for sharing :)
DeleteGreat blog, thanks for the suggestions. I already do some of these steps, I have to try the rest of them :)
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic to hear, keep it up!
DeleteThis is a very interesting concept and I would love to try it. Could you tell me what products do you exactly use?
ReplyDeleteHi, thank you for reaching out! When I started testing out the trend, I use CeraVe's hydrating cleanser, and the serums I layer before my moisturiser are Vichy Mineral 89 booster and Simple booster serum with 10% niacinamide. My current moisturiser is Weleda Skin Food. If I'm slugging on that night, I use either Vaseline or Pipette baby balm. Hope this helps you ;)
DeleteGrate. Thanks a lot. Now I have a better picture. Personally, I use only a few products myself. Cleaning is the most important part of my routine and I use silicone brush by foreo which is very good since it cleans well and it is not aggressive on the skin. After that I apply hydrating cream and eye serum. But I feel that I need to add something else, especially now during the winter.
DeleteNothing wrong with keeping it simple and it's definitely easier once you have a device to help you out, but it sounds like you really could benefit from a hylauronic acid serum. Apply it to damp skin before your moisturiser and you're golden
